Speech Therapy

Speech-language pathology treatment – helping to restore communication for socialization

What is Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy is about much more than just helping someone speak. Speech-language pathologists, or SLPs, help people who have trouble speaking, swallowing, or communicating. They also help with many different kinds of communication problems, such as voice disorders, cognitive problems, social language, and much more.

HealthFlex Speech Therapy Services

When speech-language services are given in the patient’s home, they can be given individually in a place where the patient is most comfortable. Activities in therapy can be changed to make them more useful in “real life.” The home setting also makes it possible to tailor each patient’s care plan to his or her unique social and environmental needs:

R
Cognitive and social communication assessment and training
R
Skills to address brain injuries or disorders
R
Swallowing assessment
R
Techniques for eating and drinking to prevent choking
R
Assistance with tubal feedings

The Benefits of Speech Therapy at Home

Here at HealthFlex, we feel it is very important for our patients to feel comfortable in their therapy sessions, even though the work they are doing may be very difficult. Here are some of the many benefits of doing speech therapy at home:

Natural Environment

The best therapy is done in a person’s own home. People’s “natural environment” is where they spend most of their time, and when meeting new people or trying new things, home is a “safe space.” This safe place can make someone feel more sure of themselves, which can help them perform better in therapy.

Convenience

Taking the time it takes to get to and from a hospital or clinic off of someone’s plate can relieve stress and make planning so much easier. People can often feel calm and ready for therapy when they get rid of all the things that make it difficult to leave the house.

Everyday Items and Routines

For speech therapy at home, functional objects and the environment are used. Functional objects and environments are those that you see and use often in your daily life. During a therapy session with a patient in their own home, a therapist can use the person’s things and normal routines, like eating and doing chores.

At-Home Speech Therapy with HealthFlex

When HealthFlex therapists work with their patients at home, they can get to know them and their families. After a patient has reached their goals and “graduated” from speech therapy, our therapists often stay in touch with their families. One of the best things about individual therapy at home is that people get to know each other better and build relationships that make therapy more helpful for everyone.

Speech Therapy Professionals Help Improve Your Communication Skills

All HealthFlex, speech pathologists and language therapists have doctoral or Master’s degrees, years of experience, and California licensing. They also have completed a Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech pathology from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association.

To help people improve their communication skills, our therapists meet with the patient, evaluate and diagnose specific communication problems, and work with the primary doctor to make a personalized plan of care.
